I wanted to make a sealed box out of 3/4" solid oak to match the interior of my small motorhome with no carpet on the outside. i plan on using either a single 10" or a 12" higher end jl audio subwoofer and follow the mfg. specs on sizing the box..
A rectangular piece of wood connecting all 4 sides of the box with a single large rectangular hole cut out of the middle when cutting holes in the bracing, leave at least 1" between the hole and the edge of the brace, and when using multiple circular holes it is best to have the holes staggered for more strength.. Making speakers out of solid wood is possible but is more than tricky. we make our high end octo bookshelf speakers from solid wood. this is expensive and required a new way of thinking in the way of joints, expansion and speaker shape.. The best wood isn't quite wood! a speaker cabinet needs to be as non-resonant as possible. generally, that means either dense plywood (birch ply is good) or mdf fiberboard. 3/4" thickness is standard. 1" if you're a perfectionist (and aren't worried about a hernia!)..
